A bird came down the walkway outside my window:
He did not know I saw him;
He bit a hapless worm into two halves
And ate the fellow, raw.
And then he drank a dew drop,
From a convenient grass blade,
And then hopped sideways to the wall
To let my cat pass.
He glanced with rapid eyes all around him,
They looked like frightened beads, I thought;
Then hurried all aflight to a fence pole,–
He stirred his velvet head,
Like one in danger; cautious,
I offered him a crumb,
And he unruffled his feathers
And rowed himself afloat to his softer home,
Atop my favourite shade tree.
